Easy Care Instructions for Quality Linen Shirts
For us at Faros Linen, we value the simplicity of caring for linen shirts as we are wearing our fine linen shirts daily. Please read through the comprehensive guide below for detailed care instructions, however this is how we do it:
- Washing: Wash linen shirts in the machine at around 30°C (90°F), ideally with other linen garments, using the hand wash program or a similar gentle cycle. Use a mild detergent to preserve the fabric’s quality. Our shirts are pre-washed which prevents shrinkage and color bleeding (unless washed too hot).
- Drying: Shake the shirts out well and hang them properly to maintain their shape and longevity. For optimal color preservation, hang them in the shade. Linen dries quickly so a few hours are usually enough.
- Odor Management: After each wear, simply hang the shirts in a well-ventilated area to lose odors overnight. Linen is hypoallergenic and does not easily retain odors, allowing for several wears between washes. This saves both time and water.
Advanced Care Instructions for Quality Linen Shirts
-
Preparation
- Separate linen shirts from other fabrics, especially those that may bleed colors.
- Turn the shirts inside out to protect the fabric during washing.
-
Machine Washing
- Use a gentle cycle on your washing machine with cold or lukewarm water.
- Wash at 30°C (90°F) for optimal care, though up to 40°C (105°F) is fine for linen.
- Use a mild detergent that is free from bleach or harsh chemicals to prevent fabric damage.
-
Hand Washing
- Fill a basin with lukewarm water and add a small amount of mild detergent.
- Gently swish the shirt in the water, avoiding vigorous rubbing or wringing.
- Rinse thoroughly with cold water until all detergent is removed.
-
Drying
- Do not wring out the shirts. Instead, gently press out excess water.
- Please do not tumble dry as the heat and dryness cause the fibres to break.
- Lay the shirts flat on a clean towel, then roll the towel to absorb extra moisture.
- Hang or lay flat to air dry in a shaded area, avoiding direct sunlight which can cause fading.
- When hanging to dry, shake the shirts out well and hang them properly to maintain their shape and longevity.
-
Ironing and Steaming
- It is generally better to steam linen shirts rather than iron them, as direct heat without dampness can cause the fibers to break.
- If ironing is necessary, do so while the shirt is still slightly damp using a medium-hot iron with a steam setting.
- Iron on the reverse side or use a pressing cloth to avoid shiny spots.
-
Sweat Stain Removal
- To remove sweat stains, mix equal parts white vinegar and water. Apply the solution to the stain and let it sit for 30 minutes before washing.
- Alternatively, make a paste of baking soda and water, apply it to the stain, and let it sit for 30 minutes. Then, wash as usual.
-
Storage
- Store linen shirts in a cool, dry place.
- It is usually recommended to avoid hanging linen shirts for long periods as it may stretch the fabric and instead, fold and place them in a drawer or on a shelf. This is often unpractical and we had no issues so far with hanging our shirts in the closet.
Additional Tips
- Avoid using fabric softeners or dryers as they can weaken the fibers and reduce the lifespan of the fabric.
- For stubborn stains, treat the area with a mild soap or specialized stain remover before washing.
By following these easy and advanced care instructions, you can ensure your quality linen shirts remain fresh, durable, and comfortable for a long time.
